Objective

To determine the solubility of cinnamic acid in hexane at 25C. The additivity of the volumes is assumptive .

Procedure


The solubility of cinnamic acid in hexane at room temperature was tested by dissolving the cinnamic acid into hexane with a 33-45C hot water bath. The supernatant of cinnamic acid and hexane was poured off while the test tube was still hot. The supernatant was used for the remainder of the experiment. The solution was cooled to room temperature (23C). The solubility was found using the density method.

The solution of 0.0638 grams of cinnamic acid and about 15mL of hexane precipitated in the room temperature bath (23C).

The solubility of cinnamic acid in hexane was 0.0394547M at 23C.

When the solubility was taken at a later date (2012-01-11), the solubility was 0.01531 M at 14C.

Discussion


The solubility obtained in this experiment can be compared to the solubility predictor of cinnamic acid. This model predicted that the solubility of cinnamic acid in hexane would be 0.012M. This is a lower amount than the solubility obtained in this experiment. The solubility obtained in this experiment was 0.0394547M.

The solubility was again measure two days later (as seen in Density sheet 2). The solubility was found to be 0.01531M at 14C. The room temperature bath was supposed to be closer to 25C. The temperature drop was unexpected. The reason for the temperature drop and the length of time that the sample was at 14C is unknown.
The solvent selector features a solubility predictor based on temperature . The prediction for the solubility of cinnamic acid in hexane at 14C is 0.02M. The solubility found experimentally at 14C was 0.01531M. Therefore, the solubility predicted and found experimentally were similar.

Conclusion


The objective of this experiment was to determine the solubility of cinnamic acid in hexane at room temperature. The final temperature of the room temperature bath was 23C. The solution of cinnamic acid and hexane did precipitate. The solubility of cinnamic acid in hexane at 23C was 0.0394547M.


When the sample was revisited later, the solubility was measured again. The solubility of cinnamic acid in hexane was 0.01531M at 14C.

12:03- the hot plate was turned on and to the temperature 100C.
12:04- A 500 mL beaker filled with 400mL of water was placed on the hot plate.
12:06- the hot water bath was 25C.
