Objective

Determination solubility of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde in ethanol at room temperature (25C)

Procedure

1. Weigh 4-chlorobenzaldehyde
2. Measure ethanol and combine with 4-chlorobenzaldehyde
3. Heat solution until all 4-chlorobenzaldehyde dissolves
4. Place solution in 25C water bath to cool
5. Cool until precipitate forms
6. Filter precipitate by vacuum filtration

13:34-6.9954g of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde weighed out.
13:40-4-chlorobenzaldehyde transferred to test tube #1
13:41-Ethanol added to test tube #1, covered with paraffin and capped then inverted several times. (solid 4-chlorobenzaldehyde persists)
13:43-Test tube #1 transferred to water bath at 27C (solid still persists)
13:48-Test Tube #1 water bath at 31C,inverted several times (Solid 4-Chlorobenzaldehyde dissolving but some persists)
13:53-Test Tube #1 water bath at 35C, inverted several times (Solid 4-Chlorobenzaldehyde dissolving but some persists)
13:55-Test Tube #1 water bath at 42C, inverted several times (Solid 4-Chlorobenzaldehyde dissolving but some persists)
13:56-Test Tube #1 completely dissolved and transferred to water bath at 24C
14:02-No precipitate forming Test tube #1, water bath at 24C (Sonicated for 2 seconds)
14:07-Precipitate began to form, water bath at 24C
14:09-Rapid precipitate formation, slurry like solution results.
14:36-Slurry solution from test tube #1 vacuum filter
14:40-Supernatant liquid transferred to beaker #1
14:45-Beaker #2 weighted empty 26.9698g
14:55-Dried crystals transferred to beaker #2
14:57-Beaker #2 weighted with crystals 28.8867g
14:57 Beaker #1 and #2 stored for NMR
