Objective

To determine the solubility of trans-cinnamic acid in boiling n-hexane.

Procedure

Boil 20mL of n-hexane in an Erlenmeyer flask, then transfer 1mL of the very hot hexane to a 1mL volumetric flask, cap it, and take the mass. Clean the flask and take the mass of the empty volumetric flask. Repeat this process with an erlenmeyer flask with 1.000g trans-cinnamic acid and 20mL n-hexane.

Results

The results showed that the density of the cinnamic acid in hexane was 0.602 g/mL while the concentration was 2.47M. I

Conclusion

This experiment did not provide any usable data that was able to make sense, therefore had to be repeated to recieve better results in EXP285

12:23 - Turned on hot plate to 230C
12:29 - Poured approx 20mL of n-hexane in an Erlenmeyer flask and put it on the hot plate
12:35 - Added 1.000g of trans-cinnamic acid into another Erlenmeyer flask
12:38 - Added 10mL of n-hexane to the second flask and set it on hot plate
12:39 - Raised temperature of hot plate to 325C
12:44 - Went back to hot plate and noticed all the hexane had evaporated
12:45 - :Lowered temperature of hot plate to 200C
12:46 - Added approx 20mL of n-hexane to Erlenmeyer flask and put it on hotplate
12:54 - 20.4438g weight of empty 1mL volumetric flask
12:55 - transferred 1mL boiling n-hexane to volumetric flask
12:57 - 20.7782g weight of 1mL volumetric flask (with cap) with very hot n-hexane
12:53 - Added 1.000g cinnamic acid to another erlenmeyer flask along with 20mL n-hexane and placed on hot plate
1:00 - 20.444g weight of empty 1mL volumetric flask (with cap) after n-hexane had been emptied out and dried properly
1:04 - transferred 1mL of cinnamic acid boiling in n-hexane to volumetric flask
1:05 - 21.0468g weight of 1mL volumetric flask (with cap) with cinnamic acid in boiling n-hexane
