Objective

Determination of the solubility of benzoic acid in ethylene glycol by measuring exact concentrations with a volumetric flask.

Procedure

Prepare a 0.5M solution of benzoic acid in ethylene glycol and allow it to stir vigorously for over a day. Check the next day to if the solution dissolved completely.

Results

The 0.5M concentration of benzoic acid in ethylene glycol dissolved completely after being stirred for a day.

Discussion

After making about a 0.5M solution of benzoic acid in ethylene glycol stirring it vigorously for over a day, the solution had dissolved the solid completely, implying that the actual solubility of benzoic acid in ethylene glycol is likely to be higher than this. This agrees with the results of for benzoic acid in ethylene glycol published online. The temperature of the lab was somwhere between 21-25C when the experiment was conducted.

Conclusion

The solubility of benzoic acid in ethylene glycol is likely to be more than 0.5M at a temperature somewhere between 21-25C. The exact concentration shall be determined in the next experiment.

17:13- 0.0632g of benzoic acid was poured into a 1mL volumetric flask.
17:21- Less than 1mL of ethylene glycol was mixed with the benzoic acid. Then a small magnetic stir bar was placed into the solution. The solution did not go above the miniscus line.
17:22- The volumetric flask was then placed on top of a magnetic stirrer and the magnetic stirrer was turned on and set to 150rpm.

9:45- The magnetic stirrer was turned off and the solid was dissolved completely.
