Objective

To determine the solubility of trans-dibenzalacetone [link to CS JCB] in water and 1-octanol at 25°C using UV/Vis Spectroscopy and the Shake Flask Method

Procedure

Added solute to a vial with the solvent and allowed to shake on the shake flask apparatus at 25°C. Measured solubility using UV/Vis Spectroscopy.

Discussion

There was no peak in the spectrum, but the spectrum just continued to rise, so no solubility could be measured.

Conclusion

No solubility measurement could be obtained.

18:18 Added 0.0860 g of trans-dibenzalacetone (Product 284A in UCEXP284) to a 20 mL screw cap vial (Vial A). Added 10 mL of distilled water.
18:20 Added 0.1482 g of trans-dibenzalacetone (Product 284A in UCEXP284) to a 20 mL screw cap vial (Vial B). Added 5 mL of fresh 1-octanol.
18:30 Both vials were sealed with parafilm and placed in the 25°C Shake Flask apparatus.

11:41 Placed fresh distilled water in both the 1 cm pathlength sample and control cuvettes and analyzed by the Lambda 2 Spectrometer.
11:51 Removed Vial A from the shake flash apparatus. A few yellow crystals floating on the top of the solution, but most of the crystals were on the bottom of the flask. The supernatant was clear with no yellow color. Filtered the supernatant through a paster pipette filter and placed in the sample cuvette. This is sample A_24hoursnodilution. Analyzed the sample by Lambda 2 Spectrometer. Analyzed the sample by the Lambda 25 Spectrometer and saved the spectrum as ONSEXP336A_24hoursnodilution.
12:22 Placed Vial A back in the shake flask apparatus at 25°C.
