Objective

To determine solubility of phenanthrene-9-carboxaldehyde in chloroform, water, ethyl acetate and benzene.

Procedure

Add the solute to a vial with the solvent and allow the solution to shake on the 25°C shake flask apparatus. Measure solubility using SAMS HNMR.

Discussion

Able to obtain two consective measurements for phenanthrene-9-carboxaldehyde in ethyl acetate. Only able to obtain one measurement for phenanthrene-9-carboxaldehyde in benzene, so cannot be certain the solution was saturated.

Conclusion

Solubility of phenanthrene-9-carboxaldehyde in ethyl acetate is 0.3M and the solubility phenanthrene-9-carboxaldehyde in benzene is likely around 0.67M.

11:56 0.5046 g of phenanthrene-9-carboxaldehyde in 1-dram screw cap vial A. 0.0105 g of phenanthrene-9-carboxaldehyde in vial B. 0.1253 g of phenanthrene-9-carboxaldehyde in vial C. 0.1057 g of phenanthrene-9-carboxaldehyde in vial D.
12:03 Added 1 mL of chloroform to vial A. 1 mL of water to vial B. 1 mL of ethyl acetate to vial C. 1 mL of benzene to vial D.
12:32 Sealed the vials with parafilm and attached to the shake flask apparatus and placed in the 25°C water bath.
16:35 Removed the vials from the shake plate. Crystals visible in vials B, C, and D. Added supernatant of vial C to NMR Tube 3 and supernatant from vial D to NMR 4. Both were coaxial NMR tubes. Analyzed by 500MHz HNMR using CDCl3. Added 0.0643 g of phenanthrene-9-carboxaldehyde to vial A.
16:39 Sealed the vials with parafilm and placed on the shake plate.

10:41 Removed vials from shake flask. Crystals visible in vials C and D.
10:58 Added supernatant from vial C to NMR Tube 3. Supernatant from vial D to NMR Tube 4.
11:30 Analyzed by 500MHz HNMR using CDCl3. Unable to analyze vial D, due to crystals being present in the tube and not being able to lock.
