Objective

To measure the solubility of phenanthrene-9-carboxaldehyde (Chemspider), 4-chlorophenylacetic acid (Chemspider), and vanillin (Chemspider), in acetonitrile (Chemspider). For a justification of this project see here.

Procedure

Saturated solutions are made of phenanthrene-9-carboxaldehyde (Chemspider), 4-chlorophenylacetic acid (Chemspider), and vanillin (Chemspider), in acetonitrile (Chemspider), by charging a one dram vail with 900ul of the solvent. The solute is then added until the solution is saturated. Each vial is vortexed for 30s. Also each vial is centrifuged for 1-2minutes. 300ul of the liquor is then pipetted into half dram preweighed vials. The solution is weighed and entered into the speedvac. The solution is then reweighed after all of the liquid has evaporated off. The results can be found in the Spreadsheet.

Phenanthrene-9carboxaldehyde was found to be not very soluble in acetonitrile.Only 0.18M.
4-chlorophenylacetic acid was slightly more soluble at 1.30M.
Vanillin was the most soluble in acetonitrile out of the three at 2.36M.

Discussion

The pressure indicator did not read any change in pressure. This did not affect the experiment since the predicted boiling points of the solutes at reduced pressure were well above the pressure within the speedvac. I believe this didn't significantly evaporate solutes becuase the solutes predicted boiling points at reduced pressure were very well above 25C. The lowest pressure that could be reached by the speedvac is approxiametly 0.1mmHg, and if you use the reduced press. b.p calculator at 0.1mmHg all the boiling points of the compounds were well above room temperature.

11:30 Charged one dram vials with 900ul of acetonitrile.
11:40 Added respective solutes to each vial.
11:45 Vortexed each vial for 30seconds until completely saturated.
11:55 Centrifuged each vial for 1 minute.
12:00 Took picture of vials. Picture 1
13:00 Weighed empty half dram vials.
13:15 Charged each half dram vial with solution.
13:45 Entered each vial into speedvac and turned on speedvac.
14:30 Stopped speedvac and weighed dry vials.
