Procedure:
First a saturated solution, using salicylic acid as the solute, was mixed in a 200 mL beaker using approximately 100 mL of ethanol as the solvent. The solution was mixed manually by swirling the beaker. Approximately 10 mL of the saturated solution was transferred to four centrifuge tubes labeled 1-4. The tubes were placed in a centrifuge for approximately five minutes to separate undissolved solute. Then 3 mL of the saturated solution was pipetted from each of the centrifuge tubes into respective pre-weighed test tubes labeled 1-4. Each of the test tubes with solution were weighed. Next the test tubes were placed in a hot water bath to evaporate the solvent. The test tubes with compound were weighed. Prolonged evaporation of the solvent was allowed and the test tubes with compound were weighed again.
