Procedure:
To start the experiment an amount of Maleic acid was placed into a 250mL Erlenmeyer flask. Hexane was measured into a graduated cylinder in 10mL increments and mixed into the Maleic acid by hand for 2 minutes until the solution was saturated. The final amount of hexane added was 20mL.
After the saturated solution has been thoroughly mixed, 4mL of the saturated solution were placed into four centrifuge tubes via pipette. The tubes were placed in a centrifuge and spun for 5 minutes.
A large beaker filled about a quarter of capacity with water was placed on a hot plate and brought to a boil. The centrifuged solutions were poured into four separate vials. The empty weight of each vile was recorded before filling. The filled vials were then placed inside the boiling beaker. After being in the bath for 2 minutes no product was observed. It was suggested that the experiment be rerun with a different solvent.

The experiment was rerun with methanol used as a solvent. An amount of Maleic acid was placed into a 250mL Erlenmeyer flask. Methane was measured into a graduated cylinder in 5mL increments and mixed into the Maleic acid by hand for 2 minutes until the solution was saturated. The final amount of methane added was 25mL.
After the saturated solution has been thoroughly mixed, 4mL of the saturated solution were placed into four centrifuge tubes via pipette. The tubes were placed in a centrifuge and spun for 5 minutes.

While placing the vials into the hot water bath the first of the four vials fell into the water and was dissuaded. The remaining three vials were in the bath for 26 minutes and 20s, before it was suggested that they be placed in an evaporation oven. The three remaining vials were weighed and then placed inside a larger beaker and transferred to the evaporation oven. After being in the oven for five days they were reweighed.
