First, a container of 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde was acquired along with 5 mL of acetone. The 5 mL of acetone was added to a 50 mL Erlenmeyer flask after being measured in a 50 mL graduated cylinder. In a slow manner, the pieces of 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde were added to the 50 mL Erlenmeyer flask with the acetone. After each small addition of 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde, the solution was mixed by hand using a circular swirling motion of the flask. After each small amount of solute was dissolved in the solution, another addition of solute was added until a remnant a solute remained on the bottom of the flask after two minutes of swirling. At this point, the solution was added to four separate 4-6 mL centrifuge flasks in a quantity of 2 mL of solution for each centrifuge flask using a 5 mL pipette. The centrifuge flasks were then placed in the centrifuge machine and left in there running for approximately 5 minutes before removing them and converting the solutions into four separate evaporation jars after the evaporation jars were first massed. Then, the evaporation jars with the solutions in it were massed and then placed in a hot bath which consisted of a 50 mL beaker of approximately 20 mL of water placed on a hot plate. The hot bath reached a maximum temperature of 100 degrees Celcius. The evaporation jars remained in the hot bath for approximately twenty minutes until the solvent evaporated. The evaporation jar with the remaining solute was then massed.
