ONS Challenge Procedure

  1. Add 1.001g of succinic acid to a 50mL beaker.
  2. Measure 12 mL of Ethanol with a graduated cylinder and add it to the 50mL beaker containing the succinic acid
  3. Swirl the reactants to mix, continue to stir the reactants using a glass stir rod. (solid will not totally dissolve)
  4. Record the masses of four centrifuge tubes to the hundredth of a gram and label them 1, 2, 3, and 4
  5. Using a 1mL dropper, distribute the saturated solution equally into the four centrifuge tubes.
  6. Record the volume of saturated solution in each of the centrifuge tubes to the tenth of a mL.
  7. Record the masses of the four centrifuge tube with the saturated solutions inside to the hundredth of a gram.
  8. Centrifuge each tube for 3 minutes and record any observations
  9. Gather and weigh four identical vials without the lids to the nearest hundredth of a gram. Label them 1, 2, 3, and 4
  10. Transfer the centrifuged saturated solution one to the vial labeled one.
  11. Continue to transfer the saturated solutions to each of the other vials.
  12. Record the masses of each of the vials containing the saturated solutions.
  13. Prepare four 50mL hot water baths and place them on a hot plate.
  14. Inside of each 50mL beaker place a vial that contains the saturated solution.
  15. Continue to heat the vials until all of the solvent has evaporated. (be sure that the water from the hot water bath does not enter into the vials)
  16. Remove the vials from the hot water bath and allow them to cool to room temperature.
  17. Record the mass of the solute in the vials
  18. Allow the solute to continue to dry out over a 24 hour period
  19. Record the mass of each vial containing solute to the nearest hundredth of a gram.
