PROCEDURE:
A teaspoon of succinic acid was poured into an empty, 100ml beaker. Using a 3ml dropper, in increments of 2ml, 2ml, and 1ml, 5ml of isopropanol was measured into a 125ml Erlenmeyer flask. A spatula was used to transfer a pea sized amount of succinic acid into the flask containing the solvent. A stirring rod was used to dissolve the solute into the solvent and once dissolved, two more pea sized amounts of solute was poured into the solvent and stirred with the stirring rod until saturated. Then 5ml of the saturated solution was transferred into a centrifuge tube and set aside.
To be more efficient, 15ml of isopropanol was transferred using a 3ml dropper into the same Erlenmeyer flask and succinic acid was added and stirred with the stirring rod until no more solute would dissolve. Then using a 10ml graduated cylinder, 5ml of the saturated solution was transferred into three centrifuge tubes.
The four saturated solutions in the centrifuge tubes were then put into a centrifuge for centrifugation for 2 minutes. During the centrifugation process, the mass was taken of four evaporation jars labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4 using a balance, and then recorded. Then the four tubes were taken out of the centrifuge and using a 3ml dropper, 4 ml were transferred into the four evaporation jars. The mass was taken again using the same balance, and then recorded.
A hot water bath was prepared to evaporate off the solvent. A 500ml beaker was filled 1/3 with water and placed on a hot plate to warm up. Afterwards, the four evaporation jars containing the saturated solutions, were put inside the beaker along with two blanks so that the original jars would not topple over. The solutions sat for 10 minutes while the solvent evaporated, then the hot plate was turned off and the jars sat to cool for a few minutes. After cooling, the weight of the four jars were taken using a balance, and then recorded. They were put aside for further, slower evaporation.
