Procedure:
8:45 AM: 10.00 mL of ethyl alcohol was pitted into a Kimax 25 mL Erlenmeyer flask. To this was added a small quantity of powdered vanillin. The mixture was shaken and swirled to mix. More vanillin was added until it appeared that it was dissolving slowly.
8:55 AM: The mixture was then warmed for about 30 seconds in a warm water bath and then stirred with a glass stirring rod. Since the solids dissolved with heat, more vanillin was added until it is obvious that no solute is dissolving. The heat and stirring help to dissolve the solute more quickly.
9:15 AM: 6.00 mL of the clearest part of this saturated solution was pipetted into a glass centrifuge tube, and centrifuges for five minutes to clarify it. Crystals formed on the sides of the tube, so the liquid was poured into another centrifuge tube and again centrifuged for five minutes.
9:30 AM: This resulted in a clear solution with a few crystals on the bottom of the tube. The liquid was poured into a beaker and the beaker was placed in a hot water bath to evaporate the ethanol. This took about 5 minutes. A yellow-brown syrupy liquid was the result. This liquid was removed from heat, and allowed to cool, resulting in slightly yellowish white crystals in the bottom of the beaker.
This experiment was completed four times, and took about 2.5 hours total. The procedure was repeated as stated above for each trial. Each time the beakers were massed dry, massed with solution in them, and then massed with only the recrystallized vanillin. The beakers were left out for 24 hours to slowly evaporate whatever ethanol was left in them, and then massed again. This final mass was used for the data.
