Objective

To determine the solubility of tosylmethylisocyanide and octadecyl amine in acetonitrile by NMR.

Procedure

Saturated solutions of tosylmethylisocyanide and octadecyl amine were made in acetonitrile. Inorder to saturate the solutions, after the last addition of solute to acetonitrile they were vortexed for 10min each. After centrifuging the vials the supernatants (100uL) were placed into NMR tubes containing 700μl of CDCl3. Proton NMR of the solutions were obtained on a 500MHz Varian Unity Inova instrument. The solubility of the isocyanide and the amine was determined using SAMS.

18:00 Madeup a saturated solutions of tosylmethyl isocyanide and octadecyl amine in acetonitrile. After the last addition of the solute each solution was vortexed for 10min to ensure saturation.
19:20 Centrifuged the saturtated solutions...clear supernatants were seen at the top.
19:30 Obtained a picture of the solutions.
19:45 placed CDCl3 (700uL) in to two clean NMR tubes labeled T and O. Added the supernatant from tosylmethyl isocyanide vial (100uL) to NMR tube T. Also added the supernatant from octadecylamine (100uL) to the NMR tube O.
20:00 Obtained HNMR of the solutions.
20:55 Added 10uL of 1,2-dichloroethane to the NMR tube T containing TOSMIC in acetonitrile. Obtained a HNMR.
