Conclusion

This experiment showed that a solution of acetonitrile and 3,4 methylenedioxyphenylacetic acid appears saturated at a 1 molar solution.[Which result gives you this indication? JCB] There was some initial discrepancy whether this solution would be saturated at 1 molar, but after this experiment, this appears to be the case. Another experiment can be done to find more information about the solubility of 3,4 methylenedioxypenylacetic acid in acetonitrile.

22:38: Five half dram vials were labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 respectively.
22:40: Using a micro pipette, 0.2422g of acetonitrile was placed into vial 1.
22:44: Using a micro pipette, 0.2565g of acetonitrile was placed into vial 2.
22:49: Using a micro pipette, 0.2456g of acetonitrile was placed into vial 3.
22:53: Using a micro pipette, 0.2445g of acetonitrile was placed into vial 4.
22:59: Using a micro pipette, 0.2633g of acetonitrile was placed into vial 5.
23:03: Using a spatula, .0333g of 3,4 methylenedioxyphenylacetic acid was placed into vial 1. Vial 1 was vortexed for 30 seconds.
23:07: Using a spatula, 0688g of 3,4 methylenedioxyphenylacetic acid was placed into vial 2. Vial 2 was vortexed for 30 seconds. Vial 2 appeared to be saturated.[unfortunately you cannot assess saturation by appearance - the only way you know for sure is if you heat the mixture and upon cooling solid comes out - sonicating at 40C until you reach a clear solution is a quick way to get started JCB] There was significant precipitate at the bottom of the vial.

11:39: Using a spatula, 0.1079g of 3,4 methylenedioxyphenylacetic acid was placed into vial 3. Vial 3 was vortexed for 30 seconds.
11:44: Using a spatula, 0.1581g of 3,4 methylenedioxyphenylacetic acid was placed into vial 4. Vial 4 was vortexed for 30 seconds.
11:47: Using a spatula, 0.2184g of 3,4 methylenedioxyphenylacetic acid was placed into vial 5. Vial 5 was vortexed for 30 seconds.
11:52: A half dram vial was labeled vial 6. 0.2530g of acetonitrile was placed into vial 6 using a micropipette. Using a spatula, .0.3011g of 3,4 methylenedioxyphenylacetic acid was placed into vial 6. Vial 6 was vortexed for 30 seconds.
11:58: All vials were wrapped in parafilm to prevent evaporation.
12:02: The top of each vial was wrapped in copper wiring. Labels were placed on the copper wiring so the vials are readily identifiable.
12:05: All vials were placed in the sonicator. The temperature of the sonication bath was 35C. The sonicator was turned on and the timer was set to 30 minutes.
12:56: All vials were removed from the sonicator. There was precipitation in all the vials except vial 1. [So the bath temperature was not lowered to try to see when vial 1 would show precipitate? JCB]
