Objective

To determine the solubility of salicylic acid in chloroform

Procedure

In five .5 dram vials salicylic acid was placed. To each vial enough chloroform was added so that the salicylic acid was saturated. The vials were parafilmed and then placed in a water bath at 40C. After 58 minutes, a vial was quickly removed from the bath and then added to see if all the salicylic acid went into solution. After 58 minutes, the temperature was lowered to 25C.

Discussions


Results

It was observed that it took the samples of salicylic acid to go completely into solution. At that time the temperature was lowered to 25C.
