Objective

This experiment is exploring the property of 2-phenylbutyric acid Hexane solution in different temperature, specifically in the case of 2-phenylbutyric acid from 45C . The additivity of volumes is an assumption and the densities of the solvent and solute are obtained from the ChemSpider prediction.

Procedure

  1. Make solutions of 2-phenylbutyric acid in n-hexane at room temperatue.
  2. Calculated using solubility and concentration method. Take around 5g solute and each of the mass of solvent of around 0.5g, 0.4g, 0.3g, 0.2g, 0.1g.
  3. Made the solution of different concentration of sulution for 5 tubes.
  4. Set water bath to 45C to equilibrate.
  5. Insert tubes in a way that facilitates periodic removal to examine samples. Make sure that all samples are completely submerged in the bath.
  6. Decreased the water bath temperature for every other minutes. Observed the change of 5 tubes. After each of them are crystalized, take it out.

Discussion

  1. I supposed to have concentration from 0.1 to 0.5. However, by chance I had the concentration of solution in a higher way.
  2. As the concentration is higher at this point, the solubility's saturate temperature is high somehow.
  3. The solubility of 2-phenylbutyric acid in hexane is high.

Conclusion

  1. I get five database point for 2-phenylbutyric acid in hexane solution with concentration from 4.7M to 2.4M.
  2. The temperature for those point of saturation are in a range of 30.5C to 17.5C

21:11 Set up all the equipements. Take out 5 new tubes. Marked them from 1 to 5. Weight each mass with hexene and then mass with the solution. Take Pic.1.
21:49 Sealed and tape 5 tubes. Take Pic.2.
22:01 Put them into water bath set as 45.5C and stayed for one hour. Take Pic.3.
22:31 Check all the tubes. The temperature is 44.5C. All of the solutions are clear.
22:39 Check all the tubes. The temperature is 43.5C. All of the solutions are clear.
22:41 Check all the tubes. The temperature is 42.5C. All of the solutions are clear.
