I. Procedure
a. To each of four 20 mL scintillation vials, add approximately 0.5 g of salicylic acid
b. Pipette 4 mL of methyl alcohol to each vial, cap and mix with moderate agitation by turning the vial over and back upright.
c. If solution is clear, add more salicylic acid to the vial, cap and mix as above
d. Continue adding more solute until the solution remains cloudy after mixing
e. Pour the supersaturated solution from each vial into each of four test tubes
f. Centrifuge the test tubes for 1 minute to clear the solution
g. Using a 5 mL serological pipette, transfer the clear, saturated solution from each test tube into a clean scintillation vial (for evaporation)
h. Record the volume on the pipette
i. Measure and record the mass of an empty scintillation vial
j. Measure and record the mass of each vial and its saturated solution
k. Place the four evaporation vials into a 400 mL beaker with water in the bottom
l. Place the 400 mL beaker on a hot plate and heat to above 70 °C until all solvent has evaporated
m. Measure and record the mass of the dried solute plus scintillation vial
